Exploring the fashion of the 2000s

The decade of 2000-2010 brought around so many iconic and "out-there" fashion trends, being referred to nowadays as "Y2K" fashion. The 2000s was not only a big time for new trends in fashion, but also in pop culture, with celebrities such as Paris Hilton, Christina Aguilera, and Lindsay Lohan paving the way for "fashion fiends" with their wild looks throughout the decade. From low rise jeans to tiny mini skirts, the 2000s brought us many memorable trends. Keep reading to find out more!

Enter The New Millennium!
When the world brought in the new millennium, the world of fashion also had a huge switch-up. With the 90s being associated with high-rise straight leg jeans, this was absolutely not the case with the 2000s. one of the biggest fashion trends of the new millennium was the introduction of 'low-rise' jeans. EVERYONE at the time had to have a pair of these jeans; the lower the waist, the better! The ideal height for these jeans was so that the waist-line sat right on your hips, (Roby, 2024). Styled with a chunky belt of choice, low-rise jeans took the fashion world by storm! Speaking of jeans, does anyone remember the phenomenon of wearing a dress over top? As crazy as it sounds, this was actually quite a popular trend, especially amongst celebrities on the red carpet. One celebrity in particular who was seen multiple times on the red carpet in sporting this trend as Jessica Alba, specifically when she wore a white dress over a pair of jeans at the ESPY Awards back in 2003, (Wasilak, 2019).

Juicy Couture
The new millennium introduced the craze that is the Juicy Couture tracksuit. These velour tracksuits were everywhere. I'm sure everyone has at least heard of them, the iconic tracksuit set with the word "Juicy" written in rhinestones on the back of the trousers. Although the brand was created in the 90s, it only really became well-known in 2003 when the designer Liz Claiborne (now known as Kate Spade & Co.) bought the brand for a total of $226million, (Kim and Cameron, 2020). Juicy Couture was not limited to just tracksuits! They had handbags, hats, and even their own line of perfumes, the most known being the fragrance "Viva La Juicy", (Clark, 2025). The brand became huge when pop culture icons Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie wore different coloured tracksuits on their show "The Simple Life", making the business skyrocket as Paris and Nicole were incredibly well-known reality stars in the 2000s, (Royce et al, 2020). Juicy Couture even made their way to the red carpet, with celebrities wearing the brand's tracksuits to events and award shows, and also being worn in music videos, specifically when Jennifer Lopez wore a pink Juicy tracksuit in the "I'm Real" music video. Juicy Couture has made its way back into fashion today, and has once again become a huge craze 20 years after its first rise to popularity.

Xtina
When I think of celebrities in the fashion world of the 2000s, my mind immediately says Christina Aguilera, or her persona "Xtina". Aguilera was known for her iconic outfits during the decade, sporting some of the biggest fashion trends at the time. During her "Dirrty Era", named after her hit song "Dirrty", Christina was seen rocking Y2K trends such as exceptionally short mini skirts, cargo trousers, corset tops, and scarf tops, (Allaire, 2022). Her most ICONIC look during her "Dirrty" era was when she she wore a white hat, a tiny scarf top, an extremely mini denim skirt, and black knee high boots to the 2002 VMA's. This look is known world-wide, and has very mixed opinions on if this was how a girl in her 20's should have been dressing, considering her impact on younger girls. This didn't stop her however, and she continued to dress as she pleased, with good reason to, showing that people should wear what the like, when they like, and in whatever way they want to.
